Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box
  Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box

Warm Audio gets into the guitar pedal world with their first offering, the Foxy Tone Box. This is a fuzz tone pedal that is a "part-for-part" copy of the Foxx Tone Machine as used by Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton, Adrian Belew, Nine Inch Nails, Beck and others. It's even covered in a bright (Warm Audio color) orange fuzzy material like the highly sought-after originals.

Besides copying the circuit, Warm is using period correct NOS Fairchild 2N3565 germanium NPN transistors and old 1N34A diodes. There are three controls and two switches. Just as on the original, they are: (output) Volume, the Sustain knob, and the Fuzz (Mellow-Brite) control that is a tone control with a big range.

The two switches are an in/out stomp switch for a true, hard-wired bypass and the Octave /Sustain toggle switch that adds an octave up note. In our tests, we beat up both these switches a lot to see that they will not break! We found the octave effect especially noticeable when playing higher up the neck. It would be cool if this switch was also a footswitch but then it would not be a direct copy of the original.

The octave feature and sound is directly dependent on the settings of the Sustain and Fuzz controls. For the coolest sound, there is a lot of interaction between those controls but that is typical of the analog world of yesteryear that I love. Foxy Tone is powered by a single 9V battery inside (not included) or a standard 9-Volt DC wall-wart power supply (included) and conforms to modern center-negative 9-VDC pedal power.

We tried both a vintage Gibson SG and a 1980s Fender Stratocaster guitar with the Foxy Tone plugged into my little MOD Kit 102+ 5-watt tube amp and pushing an open-backed Avatar cabinet with a Celestion Hellatone 30 12-inch speaker. The first thing my guitar player said was "this is fun playing through a fuzz tone--it makes each note sustain and distinct". I thought the SG sounded vintage and fat yet kept that SG mid-range "honk" we all love. The Strat was a little clearer and more like the fuzz tone guitar sounds of the '60s.

The Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box sells for $149 MSRP and makes a great addition to any electric guitar pedal board for instant, all-analog fuzz. It is well made in a sturdy die-cast aluminum box with good switches, rubber feet to stay put, and it's easy to setup. Awesome!!
