Warm Audio WA-JP Jet Phaser Pedal
Warm Audio WA-JP Jet Phaser Pedal

Warm Audio's recreation of the Roland AP-7 Jet Phaser is a great choice--the original 1975 units are hard to find, expensive and rarely work reliably.

The unique sound of this pedal was heard on many records spanning a broad range of genres. Bassist/singer Larry Graham both of Sly and The Family Stone and in his Graham Central Station used it as did Ernie Isley and countless others.

The Warm Audio Jet Phaser is a meticulous and exact replica--it even copies the original's weight and heft at 4.6lbs and its power requirement of 18-volts. Power is supplied by an included wall-wart power supply or by two nine-volt batteries (not included) that are held in a special compartment underneath. It has true bypass footswitch and a slide switch that toggles between the batteries and power supply.

Like with the Warm Audio WA-FTB Foxy Tone Box, for our testing we used my little MOD Kit 102+ 5-watt tube amp driving an Avatar cabinet with a Celestion Hellatone 30 12-inch speaker.

The Jet Phaser is a single input and output pedal--not stereo but it has six different sounds or modes--two Phase and four Jet modes. Both Phase modes are clean with Phase 1 being a subtle or shallow phasing effect while Phase 2 is a much deeper phase.

We both liked that when changing back and forth between fast and slow using the footswitch, the speed 'ramps' up and down like the spinning rotary speakers in a LeslieŽ cabinet. Fast is always the same speed while slow is adjustable. One of my guitarists liked playing his Baja Gold Telecaster with Phase 2 set to the tempo of the song.

The Jet Phase mode is like owning a second pedal with its output level controlled by the Jet Level control. This works out well for switching in a little boost for solos and standouts. Jet Phase adds a fuzz tone distortion along with phasing and there are four different fuzz/phaser variants.

The Jet Phase choices or modes are: bright fuzz and shallow phase, bright fuzz with deep phase, dark fuzz (sounds as if the high frequencies are rolled-off) and shallow phase, and the fourth position is dark with deep phase. Again, depending on your guitar and amp choices and settings in clean bypass, all of the Jet Phaser choices are all outstanding.

My second guitar player easily replicated classic guitar solos and sound from many records we both grew up with, it was amazing! We both love the Resonance control that is useable in all six modes. Resonance is an adjustable intensity control with max at full CW. For a chilled lead tone, try setting it all the way CCW with the third Jet Phase Mode 3.

All three guitar players that tried Jet Phaser during sessions here liked all the different sounds possible such as an almost 'talk box' articulated character when playing certain single-note figures with the Resonance all the way up. The fuzz tone part of the Jet Phaser is equal all the way up and down the guitar's range. One player tended towards the two dark Jet Phaser positions 3 and 4, as they are warm and smooth. He also liked playing with the slowest phase--it must take 10 seconds for a full turnover!

Warm Audio Jet Phaser Pedal sells for $199 MSRP and is an excellent piece of gear to give you the signature pedal sounds of the 1970s and '80s. I have updated my recording studio with both of them now!
