Targeted at people with a beginning to intermediate level of recording knowledge, Essential Recording Concepts Vol. 1 is an hour-long DVD tutorial that presents an overview of basic recording engineering practices, studio room setup and acoustics, microphone fundamentals and signal flow. With minimal technical jargon, Grammy®-winning and multi-platinum engineer/producer Francis Buckley talks us through the basic steps in obtaining great sounding recordings while, at the same time, "remodeling" a spare bedroom into a viable recording space.
The DVD is divided into chapters that outline essential recording concepts--precepts that always work no matter if you're recording in a multi-thousand dollar studio or a lowly garage. For example, there is a section about using good microphones--because it all starts with great sounding instruments, good sounding rooms, hot musicians and quality mics.
Buckley starts by tackling a space you want to use as a studio. Through an accurate appraisal of the room's strengths and weaknesses as both an acoustical and ergonomic working space, he shows how to "reinvent" the space into an accurate sounding and efficient studio. Two areas of much confusion to the neophyte recordist are monitor loudspeakers and their correct set up. We learn where they go in the room, how far apart, how far away, how to properly hook them up, and much more.
Of even greater mystery is room tuning and a whole section called "Tuning The Room" demystifies and deals with common room acoustic anomalies. Buckley finds the exact locations on the walls and ceilings to place acoustical panels. Although not exactly a "This Old House"-level of carpenter, Buckley even shows how to build a simple room absorber panel.
Chapter five talks about Signal Flow--from mics to tape deck or DAW and back to monitoring. Buckley talks about gain staging, speaker cables, microphone cables and all the rules that apply.
