Tascam DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder

The universe of new pocket digital recorders has just been increased by another galaxy with Tascam's DR-1. Most of the many pocket portables offered so far seem to divide along the lines of units that are small in size and specifically targeted for usage such as dictation and the larger models with more pro features. The DR-1 strikes a spot somewhere in between: it is small--about the size of a pack of cigarettes; records .WAV or .MP3 audio files at 44.1/48kHz/24-bit; comes with a removable 1GB SD card; and has both a limiter for auto gain control and a low frequency filter.

At the recent Winter NAMM Show, the feature I saw unique to the DR-1 and not the others was the overdub or "sound-on-sound" capability. This along with its $299 street price should get every musician on board. Other features are: high-quality stereo condenser microphone with variable and A/B configuration; rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery; integrated USB 2.0 computer interface connector; built-in tuner and vocal canceling.
