A very clever idea is incorporated into MXL's V67i Tube condenser mic: it has two sides each with its own cardioid capsule. One side is warm and lush sounding; it uses an eight-micron thick capsule. The other side uses a six-micron capsule for a bright and airy-sound. Like two microphones in one, the V67i Tube is the tube version of MXL's popular solid-state V67i. Part of MXL's design criteria was to capture the important characteristics of tube mics of yesteryear.
Like the V67G, the V67i has a deep forest green body capped by a 24-karat gold-plated grill. A single switch toggles between the two internal capsule sides and a (thoughtful) bright red LED illuminates the grill indicating which capsule is active. In a dark studio, it looks cool too!
The V67i Tube uses a 12AT7 dual-triode tube and boasts a 20 to 20kHz frequency response. There is a -10dB attenuation switch allowing the mic to be used next to very loud sound sources like guitar amps or drums. It'll handle a maximum of 140 to 150 dB SPL. It sounds excellent on a Fender or Marshall guitar amp!
I also liked the mic's good sensitivity and cardioid pattern pickup when recording spoken word and delicate acoustic guitars. The V67i has a self-noise of 22-dB--surprisingly low for a tube mic. A switchable 150Hz roll-off filter is provided for outdoors use or for protecting the capsule in unknown situations.
