Samson Q2U Recording Pak Samson thought of it all with the introduction of the Q2U Recording Interface Pak. Q2U is everything you need to record your vocals and/or instruments into your computer. Just add a laptop--PC or MAC--computer and within five minutes of opening the Q2U box, you'll be singing, playing and recording your music to your hard drive like a pro!

The kit includes a handheld dynamic cardioid microphone good for both recording and live performance plus it has all the interface controls built into it--no pesky interface box to drag along. Right on the mic is an on-off switch that mutes the mic and a conventional XLR mic connector for direct connection to your PA system for simultaneous live performance and recording. There is also a 3.5mm mini headphone jack for the included pair of lightweight HP20 studio headphones for listening and overdubbing to your music tracks playing from your computer, and a mini USB jack for connection to your computer. The Samson Q2U is powered entirely from this USB connection--no batteries!

Besides the headphones, you get a small desktop mic stand, an XLR to 1/4-inch cable, mic holder clip and a copy of Cakewalk® Music Creator software although it will work fine with Apple's GarageBand® software. The Q2U also makes a fine iChat, Skype, or audio blogger rig too.

I tried out the Q2U on my old flat panel iMAC--a computer I wouldn't think would work for recording but it ran fine under a free copy of Audacity. I liked that there are recessed up/down headphone volume control buttons for no latency monitoring right on the mic. This volume control is designed so that it cannot be change accidentally with handling. The system records at a 16-bit depth and a sampling rate of 44.1/48kHz. Samson's Q2U sells for $89 and includes all cables and instructions to get you going--nothing else to buy. Much more at: www.samsontech.com
