In the past few years, several manufacturers have rolled out "Fender Custom Shop" style basses reminiscent of the popular instruments of the 1950's and 60's. Personally, I have never been a big fan of these usually overpriced models. After all, none of them played or sounded as good as my 1964 Precision Bass.
Recently, I was asked to test the Modulus Genesis VJ4 Bass. While opening the case I could not help to think "OK, another expensive Jazz Bass replica", however after re-stringing it with my usual set of La Bella "Hard Rocking Steel" bass strings, I was pleasantly surprised. Modulus has combined graphite neck technology with classic styling. The composite central core of the neck absorbs all the string tension and, without sacrificing strength, allows the alder wood to resonate with warmth and depth. It is also equipped with a relief adjusting system that permits personalized set up. The next day I tried the Genesis VJ4 bass in the studio during an all day country rock session. We went direct, straight into a DBX-586 preamp followed by an ART PRO-VLA compressor. The instrument records well, with tone similar to an original Jazz Bass. While I still prefer the action and playability of my "old reliable" 1964 Fender, I was very impressed by the total absence of dead spots, commonly found in many basses. Additional options include: Bartolini pickups, Bartolini active preamp, Aguilar custom preamp, and a multitude of colors. At a base retail price of $1,599, it competes well against far more pricey instruments in this category.
