Alesis airSynth
by Barry Rudolph |
Following the airFX effects table top unit, airSynth is the second Alesis product to use Axyz technology. Axyz allows both of these devices to be "played" by moving your hand(s) within a three-dimensional space above the unit's orb-like top. Player's hand gesticulations and positions are scanned by invisible infrared beams emanating from the unit and translated into useful control information. While airFX is for effect processing of already recorded sounds, airSynth actually generates its own synthesizer sounds.
There are five sound parameters in the airSynth that can be manipulated by moving your hand left to right, forward and backward or up and down. There are 50 staccato, percussive, legato or continuous pad sounds as well as drum sounds, tap-tempo auto loops, drum sequences and naturally occurring sounds. The only other control on this futuristic-looking device is a single large knob used for selection of synth patches and basic global changes such as bypass, engage, freeze and release. There is an LED display that shows the current sound patch program running along with other salient parameter information. To complete your system, you can connect the airSynth to the aforementioned airFX for a complete two-handed DJ show where your left hand might play the airSynth while your right hand would control a sound processing effect with the airFX. In any event, the full-range airSynth, with 20Hz to 20kHz response and 24-bit digital converters, includes a nine-volt power supply and sells for $249 MSRP.
