Jo Mox XBase 09
by Barry Rudolph

From Germany comes the JoMox XBase 09 drum machine. The 09 is all you wish the Roland 909 machine could be and more. A true analog synth but digitally controlled, the 09 lets you forget about having to sample the 909 so that you can tweak the sounds a little.

The seven instruments: bass drum; snare; hihat; clap; rim; crash and ride have extended programmable range over the original 909. So for the bass drum you can "dial in" exactly the length, pitch, decay, harmonics, pulse, noise component, attack, accent and EQ. For the snare drum you can adjust decay time and noise tune the filter, set the tuning of the two snare oscillators and detune the two oscillators with respect to each other. The hihat parameters are: open hat decay, closed hat decay, OH/CH balance, tune, noise amount, reverse playback and choice of four different samples so that crash and ride cymbals can be played back through the hihat envelope.

All parameters are controlled from front panel knobs and remotely using a MIDI keyboard. You can record changes real-time and store them in the on-board sequencer. There are two assignable LFOs that can modulate tunings and other parameters and you can store all kits in any of the 100 internal memory locations. The sequencer can hold up to 64 patterns and you can save all patterns in up to ten "songs" that will slave-sync to external MIDI clock input. The 09 features one +4dBu mono mix output and three other separate outputs, DIN sync out, MIDI connections and a bright LED display.
