Martin Woody Guthrie Commemorative Guitar
by Barry Rudolph

Martin honors Woody Guthrie with the 000-18WG Model Auditorium 14-fret small bodied acoustic. Vintage, pre-W.W.II 000-18's are prized for their lightness, brilliance and purity of tone. Guthrie favored less expensive smaller bodied 0, 00 or 000 mahogany guitars and throughout his life, gave away hundreds of different guitars to aspiring musicians.

The braced, solid spruce top has sides and back that are book matched from select solid straight-grained mahogany. The rosette is inlaid vintage style with plain black inner and outer rings. The solid mahogany neck is slightly v-shaped with a squared and tapered headstock bearing the old Martin decal logo. Tuning machines are the vintage open gear type with chrome butterbean knobs. The fingerboard and bridge are ebony with abalone dots and Guthrie's stylized signature inlaid in pearl at the 19th fret. Each interior label will be signed by Arlo Guthrie and Woody's daughter Nora, Harold Levinthal (who manages Woody Guthrie Publications) and C.F. Martin IV himself.

Each instrument will be numbered and a second label bears a self-portrait sketch of Woody and his guitar. All profits will be split between The Guthrie Center and the Woody Guthrie Foundation. For much more about this retrospective guitar, you can contact C.F. Martin in Nazareth, PA at 800-633-2060
