The doumbek (pronounced doom beck) is an exotic hand drum that is becoming a popular substitute for the standard tom-tom used in trap drumsets. Recently, I recorded a drummer who used a Remo doumbek instead of the first high tom-tom in his kit. I was struck how this simple change made his drum fills more interesting and unique. I actually found tom-tom fills fitting better into the song with the addition of this one drum. The doumbek has a rich, earthy tone with a sharp attack (when struck hard with a stick) and is tunable. Remo makes the Diane, Leila and Cleopatra pretuned drums as well as the Diane tunable doumbek. You can get these drums in black, white, blue, green, purple or red sparkle metal-flake finishes. All of these finishes match the Remo Valencia Series of conga and bongo drums. All the new doumbeks are made of Acousticon, an exclusive Remo synthetic (and seemingly indestructible) material and are fitted with Renaissance heads. This is a good thing... standing up to the extra punishment a good rock drummer can dish out with a pair of Louisville slugger-model drumsticks. Remo is at 661-294-5700 or Web to: www.remo.com |
