Seymour Duncan SH-14 Custom 5 Pickup
by Barry Rudolph |
The Custom 5 was group-developed by contributors to the Seymour Duncan Web site on-line user's group forum who realized they could get special tones by switching magnets around in different humbucker pickups. One common "mod" involved replacing the ceramic or alnico 2 magnets in either an SH-5 Custom or SH-11 "Custom Custom" humbucker with an Alnico 5 magnets.
Seymour Duncan's product development team responded by releasing the pickup as a production model called the SH-14 Custom 5. The "5" in Custom 5 refers to the Alnico 5 magnet. Tonally, the Custom 5 is a compromise between the SH-5 Custom and the SH-11 Custom. It is said to offer the optimum balance of warmth, punch, power and clarity with a more vintage-like tone and less distortion. Good for rhythm sounds and beautiful, deep singing lead tones, it is recommended for the bridge position. The Custom 5 sells for $94 MSRP and is hand-built in Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara, California facility and comes in black, white or zebra (black and cream). It includes four-conductor cable and is available in traditional or Trembucker string spacing. Seymour Duncan/Basslines Pickups at 5427 Hollister Ave. Santa Barbara, CA 93111-2345 USA.
