The OmniPlayer from Sphere Multimedia
by Barry Rudolph |
The OmniPlayer is called a Universal Portable Device and is positioned to become the "uber-PDA"...the ultimate, all-in-one, consumer portable device that will eventually include all the capabilities of a portable music player, PDA (that's Personal Digital Assistant), mobile phone, Web browser, GPS (that's Global Positioning Satellite) navigator as well as yet-to-be announced portable appliances.
Right now, the Omni is a music player and recorder that records from any source such as the Internet, CD's, cassettes, etc. The Omni will work with MP3 formats as well as Microsoft Audio 4.0 and uses Flash memory cards for storage. All the proposed distribution, security and compression formats agreed upon by the SDMI (that's Secure Digital Music Initiative) are supported by the OmniPlayer. With four memory cards installed, the unit weighs 5.1 ounces, measures 4.4 inches by 2.7 inches by 1.2 inches and sells for $199. The included 32Mb memory will hold anywhere from 67 to 133 minutes of music depending on data compression level.
