Author and musician Gary Hustwit has written a must-have reference for all aspiring musicians and artists who want to promote themselves by way of the Internet. The 138-page book takes the reader step-by-step through the whole process of learning what the Internet is to getting on the Net and then to fully exploit all the features and opportunities possible within the Net.
Chapters one through eight cover how the Net works; what equipment you'll need; getting on-line; E-mail; Usenet, Newsgroups and mailing lists; the World Wide Web; and Chat and IRC methods. With this understanding you are now ready to get to the whole point of the book which is to use the Internet for your own purposes as a musician and artist.
Chapters nine through twenty-two cover: Internet radio and streaming audio and video over the Net, putting your music on the Net, selling your music, MIDI and Music Software, record labels and record stores on-line as well as musical instrument manufacturers, and on-line magazines. If you are already on-line, then you could probably skip right to chapter nine and dig in. However, I still found the reference on Internet terms and much other information in the earlier chapters useful.
The Musician's Guide to The Internet sells for $19.95 from Rockpress and is distributed by Hal Leonard Publishing.
