ISIS or Instrument Security Identification System is a registry and recovery system for musical instruments. The ISIS company, founded in 2003, has already enlisted dozens of retail stores to start offering this service to their customers. There is also online registration at www.isisid.com.
As a value-added service for retailers, ISIS is available to musicians at any of four fee levels commensurate with their instrument's value. ISIS claims a 20 times better chance of recovery of your lost or stolen instrument over traditional methods.
For a minimal annual fee based on the monetary value of the instrument, registered owners enjoy peace of mind that their instrument has another layer of protection. In the event a musical registered in the ISIS system is lost or stolen, the secure database is updated with the entire ISIS network of dealers alerted. When the instrument is recovered, ISIS pays a reward to both the registering and recovery dealer members.
ISIS is available for all music instruments. Instruments that do not have unique serial numbers or the serial numbers are easily removed; a rice-sized data chip is embedded--hidden within the instrument so as not to affect the sound. A special scanner is used to power and then "read" the contents of this chip. This method is similar to an ID implant used on pet animals. A side benefit of the ISIS System is that it provides a third-party verification of ownership--good when reselling or establishing provenance.
