KRK ROKIT G4 Monitors
 KRK ROKIT G4 Monitors
KRK, a part of now owned by Gibson Brands Inc., is shipping the new line of KRK ROKIT G4 the fourth generation of these popular studio monitors. The ROKIT G4 range of bi-amped monitors comes in four sizes: (listed by woofer size) the RP5, RP7, and RP8 (tested here) plus the brand new tri-amped RP10-3.

The RP10-3 has a 10-inch woofer, 4.5-inch mid-range driver and a 1-inch tweeter that is used in all the RP models. The mid-range and tweeter drivers are arranged in a 90-degree rotatable section to facilitate either vertical or horizontal monitor setups. The entire line incorporates many of the advanced features of KRK's professional-grade V Series 4 monitors

A brand new feature on the G4s is a LCD screen on the rear panel with its single, data-entry encoder knob to access EQs for the DSP Room tuning system. With five low frequency and five high frequency EQ settings, you will have 25 different combinations to tailor the monitor's sound to your room's acoustics.

You'll have access to collections of preset equalizers curves and a low frequency shelving EQ to compensate when the G4s are placed near corners or close to walls. The equalizer has a low peak EQ setting presets for placing the monitors on console meter bridges or desktops in home/project studios.

Class-D amplifiers power the G4s and they come with the (by now) familiar yellow drivers made of Kevlar® plus there is a built-in "brick-wall" peak limiter to protect the whole system.

The cabinets are made from a low resonance material that rest on built-in high-density isolation foam pads that decouple the speaker from any surface minimizing the transmission of vibrations to improve clarity. The cabinets have front-firing ports for good bass reproduction and low frequency extension.

I tried a pair of RP8s in an acoustically treated control room here at my project home studio. I first reset the DSP Room Tuning to flat--the factory settings just to get a feel for the RP8's basic character. I used Room EQ Wizard software to measure my room and then apply any changes to the RP8s using the DSP Room tuning system in the LCD screen on the rear panel.

The KRK RP8 monitors (after minimal tweaks) are as close to perfect as any monitor I've had in the same left/right positions. I found them to have enough low frequency and clarity so as to be easy to mix on. Inherent problems and flaws in recordings and mixes show up and the RP8s sound good at low volume levels.

KRK is working on a standalone, downloadable KRK Audio Tools App that assists with monitor placement in your room, level matching, adding a subwoofer and assistance with its polarity and crossover settings. There is also EQ help for all KRK monitor lines.

Individual monitor prices range from $179 for the RP 5, $239 for the RP7; the RP8 monitors are $299 and the RP10-3 sell for $499.
