KeyToSound Nexsyn Virtual Synth Nexsyn is a polyphonic synth solidly in the classic subtractive family. Using true stereo signal architecture, this synth has three oscillator modules that use up to seven different oscillator waves and sounds from an included 4 GB Big Fish Audio sample library. Nexsyn runs on any host--Mac or PC using RTAS, VST, and AU formats. I found all the screens very intuitive and it's easy to program good sounds.

Nexsyn has a 16-step arpeggiator with loop duration settings for parameters like chord play, slide, staccato, velocity and more. There are three filter sections each capable of holding one of sixteen filter types. There are six versions of high pass filters, six bandpass, six low pass, and five stereo high and low pass filters combinations where the cutoffs of each channel can be modulated using the Spread control. (This produces a cool, animated effect)

There are six modulations sources and over 60 modulation destinations possible. Some sources are: amp, filter, modulation envelopes; LFO; Pitch bend and Mod wheels; Aftertouch; Pitch; Velocity and Random. There are two Effects sections each with your choice of up to eight effects. All digital processing works in stereo and includes: three different choruses, echo, flanging, phaser, reverb, and compressor.

The unique feature that caught my eye is the built-in NetNotes Internet browser. This is to access the thousands of presets available at www.keytosound.com. You can quickly audition presets before 'purchase' as well as add your own to either private or public folders. Upon registering Nexsyn, you will set up an account with a starting amount of 'credits' you can use to purchase presets. Selling your own presets to others within this online community credits to your account. No real money is exchanged. Nexsyn sells for $339 and for more information, check www.keytosounds.com.
