Glyph Technologies' PortaGig 800 There are hard drives and there are hard drives. Sure you can go and buy brand x on sale and use it for holding all your digital photos and movies but what about storing and transporting irreplaceable valuable assets? Real assets like digital record files that maybe the intrinsic property of your record company and, needless to say, a catastrophe if you lose them do to a drive failure. Glyph Technologies backs all their drives with their legendary service and technical support. They come standard with a three-year warranty, two-year free First Level Data Recovery, with first-year overnight replacement. Send them the drive and get a new one with all your files recovered and intact.

The PortaGig 800 is the latest in their super portable line that comes in a 500GB size. It has two Firewire 800 spigots, USB 2.0 port, and power switch for keeping the drive connected at all times but powered off when not needed.

Inside PortaGig 800 are: an Oxford's 934 chip set, Seagate's Momentus 2.5 inch SATA hard drive running at either 5,400 or 7,200-RPM, and 8MB of cache memory. Capable of 76MB/sec sustained transfer rates using the FireWire 800 port, PortaGig is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux systems. Glyph tests all PortaGig 800 drives and certifies that they'll handle up to 56 audio tracks at 96kHz.

Since I received mine, I have been trying to burn it out with no luck. My extreme test is the six hours of continuous operation it takes to do my weekly clone copy of both my office and Pro Tools computers' system drives. It works flawlessly and the main reason why all my Pro Tools drives are Glyph drives.

All 7,200-RPM PortaGig models come with Seagate's G-Force Protection, a drop sensor to detect that the drive is in freefall, and moves the read/write heads to safety before a shock takes place. The PortaGig 800 has a black, anodized aluminum case, measures approximately 3 inches wide by 5 inches deep, and weighs less than 10 ounces. It's bus powered, so it can be used without needing its included AC power supply--useful when power is not available. Visit www.glyphtech.com.
