Who'd thunk years ago that the words "USB" and "turntable" could ever be used in the same sentence? ION has the sleek-looking PROFILE LP turntable that comes with both conventional L/R audio RCA output cables and a USB port jack. You use the Profile just like any other turntable record player with your home stereo but you now have the ability to directly record songs on vinyl into any computer via the built-in USB audio interface. Once inside your computer, you can convert the CD-grade audio files into MP3s and load them into your portable player. Why re-buy your old record collection when for the ION PROFILE LP's $99 MSRP you can convert all your old records to MP3s and play them on your iPod?
The PROFILE LP comes with an easy-to-use software application for both PC and MAC computers. EZ Converter software converts recordings into digital files and saves them into your iTunes® library. All versions of Windows 7, Vista, and XP are supported. Intel Macs running OSX 10.4.11 and up are supported.
Once I connected the PROFILE LP with the included USB cable to my MAC (I have a PPC running 10.4.11 and it worked fine), I tried the EZ Converter software. With EZ Converter, you simply click on the Record and End buttons for each song on your LPs you want to make a separate digital file.
That file is then converted to a 192kbps MP3 file (on PCs--on MACs the quality is set in Preferences) and added to your music library in iTunes. It could not be easier--there are no levels to fiddle with. If you use the freeware Audacity, you can also record from the PROFILE LP and then export files in .WAV formats plus convert old 78-RPM discs even though they play on the turntable at 33 or 45-RPM. Good to know!
I like everything about the PROFILE LP--its modern design, straight-ahead operation, clean sound from the supplied cartridge.
The ION PROFILE LP acts a "bridge" between the old days of vinyl to these days of iPods and downloaded music. By establishing a connection to your computer, it updates any home stereo system. Highly recommended!
