Abbey Road Flutes by Spitfire Audio
By Lars Deutsch
Abbey Road Flutes GUI |
Spitfire Audio's new Abbey Road Flutes is available in both Pro and Core editions; Pro is comprised of nearly 45 GB of samples of a two-flute orchestra section recorded at the famed Abbey Road studios. Core includes beautiful legatos and essential playing techniques while the Pro version adds more playing techniques and expressive legatos.
Abbey Road Flutes uses Spitfire Audio's own player with the option to use an "eco load" feature to speed up loading times--eco load is my default preference. To further streamline this initialization process, you may setup defaults for all instances that you would use in future sessions.
Both editions sound incredibly warm, smooth and expressive. I like how Spitfire Audio has combined a "ready to go", pre-mixed and polished sound with openness and an expressive feeling all available right at your fingertips. It just works, playing them straightaway without any fussing with the interface. I liked the many microphone and customizations options, but usually, the default settings were fine and always sit well within my music compositions.
With the many flute libraries available for music composers and producers, Abbey Road Flutes has proved to be superior; you can hear and feel how much every aspect of flute(s) as a virtual instrument is reproduced. To compare, I used the same MIDI file from these tests and opened them in my usual "go to" flute sample player/collection. I found Abbey Road Flutes' expressiveness and beautifully open vintage sound to be superior. This is shows how much technology for sampling classical instruments as progressed in the last ten years. The amount of control over both playing techniques and various microphones/signal chains sets this library apart.
The legatos are stunning and the custom player offers all the control I could ask for. However, I would like to see as an option, all playing techniques on one page. In the Pro edition the legatos are split up between different pages.
Abbey Road Flutes is the best "score ready" flute library I know. If I need flutes for a score, I go with Abbey Road Flutes first.
Spitfire Audio's Abbey Road Flutes Pro sells for $309 or the Core edition is $189 MSRP.
